FAQ
Currently, we have between 4-6 residents during any given month.
Once accepted for the residency, our curator will have an online chat with each of the artists to better understand their interests and help them plan their trip and stay. Upon this, we will build a residency plan consisting of group activities, individual meetings for feedback, workshops and trips. During the online meeting, you will also be able to discuss in detail any needs you have regarding your studio space, accommodation, equipment, rental car and much more.
Throughout your stay at Nocefresca, she will always be available on call to answer your questions, assist you with any needs and help plan your activities. She lives in Cagliari and she will visit the residency on three different occasions each month offering the opportunity for individual meetings for those who want it. On the other hand, our assistant curator will be always present in Milis functioning as the main reference point. Their role is essential if you need support in finding a specific kind of equipment or material, navigating conversations with someone who doesn’t speak English, connecting with locals you want to involve in your project, suggesting Sardinian sites of interest relevant to your research, scouting locations for site-specific projects and sort out all the needed authorizations this may involve, and much more.
Unfortunately, for now you will have to rent a car from rental companies. We do have touristic bikes with three gears that are not really ideal for long distances, but are enough to let you explore the village!
If you land in Cagliari, there are many trains (
www.trenitalia.it) that will get you to Oristano, the nearest city to Milis. From there, you can either choose to jump on a bus for a 30-minute drive (Google Maps will tell you the times) or, by booking beforehand, ask Pepebianco Association to drive you to Milis. There is a taxi service in Oristano, but it does not often come to Milis for pickups. You can also land in Olbia, but from there the public transportation connections are more difficult.
Many artists stayed with us for two or three months without a car, and still managed to enjoy their stay. However, if you are interested in travelling and exploring the island, it is strongly advised to rent a car. Especially if automatic, this can be quite expensive, so we suggest you contact the other artists if you are considering sharing a car rental. If you are unable to book a car, it is possible to request rides from the Pepebianco Association, usually to Oristano or to the beach.
Sardinia has a basic public transport system. It is easy enough to get between Milis and Oristano, and from Oristano to Cagliari, but much more difficult to get to places like Nuoro or Alghero, as well as the beautiful Sardinian beaches closeby.
Although Milis doesn’t offer a gym, there is a nice park with sport fields to play tennis, soccer and basketball. You can also run through the orchard fruits just outside the village or have a bike ride to explore the countryside and discover some of the natural springs we have. Our partner Pepebianco Association also offers yoga lessons.
Please note that climate change exists in Sardinia too and we cannot predict exactly how each month will be. Consider the following information as just an example of the average weather.
Temperatures in March and April are mild (12 – 22 °C) without much rain, but it's worth packing a rain jacket. May, June and September are hotter (20 – 30 °C, a few days it can reach up to 38°C). Although October and November are a bit colder (10 – 20 °C) and it sprinkles once in a while, it is still possible to go for a swim! In December it is still sunny, a bit colder (10 – 15 °C) but it does not snow.
This is a more rural area and not many people speak English. The staff at Casa Bagnolo and the other residents speak English. It is very helpful if you are able to speak some Italian, but not essential. Learn how to order your cappuccinos and vino rosso beforehand!
Sure, just email us and you will get all the information about the shipping.
If you don’t want to travel with some materials (maybe they are too delicate or too heavy), we are happy to buy them for you for an extra fee. We will bring them to your studio just before your arrival. Contact us for more information.
Exactly. For the first few years, we have a budget to purchase art equipment, gear and tools of lasting nature. We evaluate each request depending on the potentiality that the equipment has to be used by many other artists in the future.
At the moment, Nocefresca cannot provide any fellowships. If you are selected, however, we can provide you with a formal invitation letter and, if necessary, an official residency plan with a personalized budget.
Of course, none of the activities planned by Nocefresca are mandatory. Whether you choose to share the flat with other artists or to have your private accommodation, you will be able to decide for yourself how much time to devote to the activities. However, we encourage participants to conceive them as an opportunity to engage with each other, develop new contacts and better understand the Sardinian context.
It is a great occasion for you to meet the local community and showcase what you have been working on during the residency. Whether it is a final piece or just some work in progress, the locals are always very curious and genuinely interested. Often people from other villages and towns come as well to then hang out in Casa Bagnolo courtyard for a drink and chats. This is not a mandatory activity and you will have the chance to decide for yourself whether to take part in it or not.
Oristano is the nearest city where you can find all of this! It has a shopping mall, different art shops, and hardware stores. We will be happy to guide you to the best ones.
If you are approved for the Nocefresca residency, we will send you a letter of confirmation including documents to sign and send back to us. You will then be charged only the confirmation fee, which is 450 €. This has to be paid within 2 weeks from the notification of selection for the residency. The confirmation fee is necessary to book accommodation and all services related to the residency and is not refundable. Once the payment has been received, your place is confirmed. The remaining residency fee is due 12 weeks before the starting date of your residency at the latest. Both payments can be made via bank transfer or via online money transfer systems (Paysend, TransferWise, Western Union). If you are approved for a residency, we will provide you with the necessary information.
If cancelled up to 8 weeks prior to the starting date of your residency, the whole residency fee is refunded, net of confirmation fee. If cancelled 8-4 weeks prior to the starting date of your residency, 50% of the residency fee is refunded, net of the confirmation fee. If cancelled 4 - 0 weeks prior to the starting date of your residency, none of the residency fee is refunded.
A 80 € fee will apply if you need to reschedule your residency period. A notice of at least 8 weeks is required. Please note that your request will be granted only within the same calendar year, and only in case of vacant positions available.
Casa Bagnolo, the studio building, has two stores; the first one has two studios and two desktops that are physically accessible for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility, whereas the top floor at the moment is not. The courtyard is accessible. As each house is different, don’t hesitate to contact us if you need more information about their accessibility.
Since Nocefresca residency is focused on research, sharing knowledge and experiences with other artists and the local territory, there are not any required outcomes.
During your stay in Sardinia, we only ask for the gift of your creative input in any form, such as cooking your favorite recipe during a public dinner, conducting a workshop for local artists, having a public talk or providing a local service founded on your personal passions. This is not mandatory, but it definitely helps create a nice bond with the group. Since we seek to establish a lasting creative hub where artists come and leave but are always remembered, any input that you offer and connections that you make are an invaluable contribution to create a sustainable and lasting artist community in Sardinia.
Accommodation (including water, electricity, gas, kitchenware, set of towels and bed linen, free parking on the street, washing machine, the hosts do a general cleaning at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of your stay), 24/7 access to studio space, access to our equipment, yoga mat, curatorial assistance, scheduled activities during the month such as open studio events, workshops, public talks or trips, access to bikes, publication of your profile in our online archive, free Wi-Fi in both the house and the studio.
Travel, medical insurance, food, production costs, any consumable material and any extra services.
Yes. Guests are welcome in the same room and in the same bed as the artist’s (supplemental fee is 15 € per night, the minimum stay is 1 week). Artists are welcome to bring children exclusively if they request a private apartment, but the children are not allowed to stay at the studios premises.
There are a few dogs walking freely around town and a cute dachshund named Mino who is at Casa Bagnolo, the residency premises, exclusively when someone from the Pepebianco Association is there.
Unfortunately, at the moment we can not accept any pets. Pets are not allowed at the houses either.
At Casa Bagnolo, the studio premises, meals are available thanks to our collaboration with Pepebianco Association. Their staff cooks authentic Sardinian meals with local ingredients upon booking. All the information about how to join the association and the related fees will be given once accepted for the residency.
Our houses are equipped with a full kitchen that you can use if you feel like cooking independently. There are also three grocery stores in Milis, though two are more bodega-like, and the staff at Casa Bagnolo can also suggest you where to buy fresh products from locals.
In Milis, there is a small farmer’s market on Wednesdays, two butcher shops with fresh meats and cheeses, a bakery right off the town square for fresh bread, a pizzeria, and there is a small selection of bars in town that have coffee, morning pastries, gelato, and drinks. Oristano is the closest city to Milis, a 20-minute car drive or a 30-minute bus ride. There you will find larger grocery store chains that will carry a wider selection of items. You won’t go hungry!
